Disciplined Leader Definition

What separates leaders who scale from those who don’t isn’t a bolder vision — it’s their disciplined leadership behaviours that turns their vision for the company into reality

What do I mean by disciplined leadership?

Firstly, it is being deliberate—deliberate in how you lead yourself, deliberate in the behaviours you use to build trust, accountability, and develop your team, deliberate in how you lead your board (rather than being led by it), and deliberate and determined in how you handle and learn from setbacks. Being a disciplined leader means executing the right choices constantly and consistently, even when they are uncomfortable or inconvenient. Disciplined leadership means understanding the result you want and then deliberately demonstrating the behaviours that you know will deliver your desired outcomes. If you want to achieve your vision, you cannot leave any of these areas to chance.

Secondly, it is having the awareness and understanding that every one of your actions, such as what you say, who you speak to, how you react to a situation, even your calendar, is being watched and judged, and has an immediate impact on the people you lead and on the organisation. Even a subtle gesture by you is exaggerated by your role as founder CEO. The team also copy you so what you do and how you lead sets the example and is multiplied throughout the organisation; therefore, you must be a role model of your and the company’s values and for what you expect from your team. Disciplined leaders use this positional power to their advantage to embed a culture that aligns with the company’s values and demonstrates how they want their team to lead. The term for this is your leadership shadow which all my clients know is their most powerful leadership lever.

Finally, disciplined leaders are never satisfied with their capabilities and continue to focus on their development because they realise if they do not scale themselves then the business won’t scale either. You may see this as a paradox as discipline may suggest rigidity. However disciplined leaders are not that way. They are beyond the concept of avid learners, and instead, are relentless students. Not just in their business skills but in their personal growth, always investing and expanding their skills and even re-inventing themselves when that is needed.

Disciplined Leader Summary: A disciplined leader is deliberate, self-aware, and consistently role-models the behaviours they expect from others. They are a relentless student, constantly evolving their leadership approaches and reinventing themselves as new challenges arise or as the business requires.
